The Lauras by Sara Taylor

The Lauras is a fine work of literature that combines coming of age with a mother's journey. Taylor's writing exposes the very heart of the matter which is sometimes not clear at all.
It is an absorbing read, I will pass it along and probably read it again.

View from the Couch February 2014

This month was occupied with some catching up on films that I meant to see but missed when they were first released; revisiting some old films that I remember liking; and discovering a few new ones. Films that I find substantive, I post as single review features. This month included two excellent and unusual films: Fruitvale Station and Frances Ha.

Fruitvale Station

Coogler, Whittaker

Finished watching Fruitvale Station about 20 minutes ago and I am wowed.

The story was presented with as much humanity as I have ever witnessed in a film. We weren't sold on Oscar's reformation, we were offered his humanness. And has a film ever had such a powerful final scene? Nope, Fruitevale Station wins that prize.

I am hearing more and more tales of seniors in our LGBTQ community, who are in dire straits. I have a few opinions about that.

A generation of people, who broke down barriers, stepped to the front, changed things for our community, are aging and many are without resources. As I listen to the stories, I hear loads of self accusation for not working and plans to get employed to take care of themselves, when frankly, because of age and physical limitations, that is impossible.
