When Night Is Falling

Elena Undone begs comparison with Patricia Rozema's When Night Is Falling which is much better and features a circus.

The Pastors' wives, Pascale Bussieres in When Night Is Falling and Necar Zadegan in Elena Undone, are both exceedingly beautiful and married. They fall in love with their soul mates, who just happen to be women because they aren't lesbian, they just fell in love with a woman. Yadah yadah yadah.

I found Elena Undone boring and predictable. Sam Harris had the best dialogue and brought some relief. There were moments I could relax into rapture over Necar. However, the syrupy soundtrack and the hazy filters were just too gag me with a spoon.

Nicole Cohn's latest also utilized a technique that is one of my biggest pet peeves.  Scenes of the characters falling in love, deep in  discussion were relieved of dialogue and mashed into a kaleidoscope haze with a pukey soundtrack. Cairo Time (reviewed earlier) did this too. Hello Directors, dialogue is important, like these few words from When Night Is Falling: "Without music, life would be a mistake." You've got to let us in on the substance between lovers, it is a hell of lot more than gooey looks. Surprise me.
