I am a gay person before I’m anything else. I’m a gay person before I’m a white person, before I’m a Jew, before I’m a writer, before I’m American, anything.

I am a woman before I'm anything else.

John Farr Movie Picks

John Farr's article on HuffPo basically quotes AO Scott. Scott's original article A Golden Age of Foreign Films, Mostly Unseen is a must read. You can skip Farr's comments and go right to his list and my ratings/comments;

Metro Weekly's 25 Gay Films Everyone Must See

I love lists and these are good ones. The sequel list includes a film I've not seen Love of Siam; I will see it now.

I thought it ironic that they gave John Grayson's films Zero Patience and Lilies one slot. Grayson is in a category all of his own, rivalled only by the likes of Almodovar and Ozpetek, so one slot for two films seems stingy.

Geraldine Ferraro

I was present in the Miami auditorium when Walter Mondale announced that Geraldine Ferraro would be the vice-presidential candidate for the Democrats.

We were at a NOW conference at the Fountainbleu which was already a great experience thanks to Kate Clinton. The convention delegates went crazy, crying, laughing, hugging. It felt like times were a changing.

Miriam Toews

Miriam Toews

This book is as fearless as the main character, 16 year old Nomi Nichols. Not that Nomi is fearless, but she is not surprised.

Bow Grip

Ivan E Coyote

Ivan E Coyote

Bow Grip is fascinating; a male protagonist learning to cope after his wife leaves him for another woman written by a transgendered author. Well written with fully drawn characters and a vocabulary that expresses sensitivity without being trite,

The Moonlit Earth

Christopher Rice

Christopher Rice

There is more confidence and maturity in Mr. Rice's writing with each new book. The Moonlit Earth does not disappoint in that regard. It is a fast paced thriller built around news and topical events.

Barb Johnson

Barb Johnson

"There's real trouble in the world. The kind that can't be fixed. The kind we lie awake keeping vigil against. Love is not trouble. It is all we have to light our days..."

Nurse Jackie S2

Nurse Jackie

Edie Falco is, simply put, one of the best actors of our times. Nurse Jackie continues to draw you in, make you feel and make you laugh.

The writing on Nurse Jackie is damn good too. Jackie's admonishment of the drinking mother; Zoey's interaction with God or the nephew of God; Dr. Ohara's fabulous forays into fashion and foible.

Elena Undone

When Night Is Falling

Elena Undone begs comparison with Patricia Rozema's When Night Is Falling which is much better and features a circus.

The Pastors' wives, Pascale Bussieres in When Night Is Falling and Necar Zadegan in Elena Undone, are both exceedingly beautiful and married.

In a Strange Room

I completely understand why Damon Galgut's novel was Booker Prize nominated, but my psyche couldn't take that much sorrow and loneliness.

The book is divided into 3 parts: 1. The Stranger, 2. The Lover, 3. The Guardian. After reading The Stranger, I was looking forward to The Lover, but it was as lonely a read as I've ever experienced. I attempted to go on to The Guardian, but the schizophrenic blues were just too much for me.
